(SAPP is facing a split?) KriSIS DaLAman SAPP

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Progress Party (SAPP) appears heading for a split with several high ranking party officials contemplating leaving the party over its current acrimony with the Barisan Nasional leadership.

It was reliably learnt that at least two Vice Presidents and up to six Supreme Council members from the interior and East Coast may quit in the coming days, as they disagree with the decision taken by its President Datuk Yong Teck Lee to repeatedly embarrass the top BN leadership at every opportunity.

Yong had called for a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

It was understood that the party's Secretary-General had gone to Sandakan to persuade party members in the districts not to leave.

The party's leadership detected the displeasure of the said Vice President and Supreme Council members when they boycotted a convention on Sabah Issues organised by the SAPP last Saturday.

Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Harris Salleh spoke at the convention.
The source said even Tawau MP Datuk Dr Chua Soon Bui had distanced herself from the party leadership.

On June 19, SAPP President Datuk Yong Teck Lee dropped a bombshell by declaring that the party had lost confidence in the PM.

Yong said two MPs, Datuk Dr Chua Soon Bui and Datuk Eric Manjimbun would support a vote-of-no confidence against the Prime Minister in the Parliament sitting beginning then on June 23.
However during the press conference several SAPP members were absent including, its Deputy President Datuk Raymond Tan Su Kiah, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, Assistant Minister Melanie Chia (SAPP Wanita Chief), Deputy Speakers Datuk Frankie Chong (Vice President), Likas Assemblymen Datuk Liew Teck Chan (Vice President) and Elopura Assemblymen Aw Kam Wah (Youth Chief).

According to the source, many are fed-up with the way Yong led the party as most of the statements he (Yong) made were not agreeable to the majority of the party leaders and Supreme Council members.
